My idea of scenario concerns « Mata Hari » played by Greta Garbo in the 30’s.
It would be a remake of Mata Hari’s story, based on her life but not precisely her true life and end because I don’t want to make a documentary, which would be too political, personal or controversed.
So we could see her expectations, her sense of the beauty and spirituality, her intrigue with men, what seemed important for her through the dance and other activities. Her end would be different as she would run secretly in another country against political pressure. It could be a tribute to the life that Mata intended to live if she hadn’t met barriers.
• The movie would show things not seen in the previous movies like:
- Her complex situation with Alexis who was a military and her lover while she was a not very important spy, and the questions around: “Was he investigating about her during their romance?”, “Did they play with each other or was it a true love affair?”, “Did she intend to make something against him in case of need?”. I heard that they imagined a whole city to live together their own vision of spirituality (just like the Queen Nefertiti with Akhenaton) because they were really romantic and inspired.
- Her woolly situation with men around who were her protective fans, influential and rich, who have certainly acted against her arrest but who were also competitors. I’d like some really impressive ideas about complex situations that we can notice in true life or in her life, and that can revert against a character.
• Some amazing elements that I’d like to put in the movie would be:
- Some “model looking” look-alikes or also what I call “sphinge” look-alikes who can remind different celebrities at the same time, especially men because Mata Hari was very surrounded by men. Those doubles are really unusual and I’m not sure that there will be a new generation like them, so I find interesting to put them in the movie. They could represent old as new stars since doubles can go through barriers of time. So you could see someone looking like Ramon Novarro or John Gilbert in the movie even if we are in the 2000’s! That’s the advantage.
- Some impressive costumes of course, especially in two fields: firstly, costumes of Dame of cards (red, white or black) and secondly, mythology costumes like sirens or goddesses.
- Socially, I would like to show in the movie that if some women would have helped each other, Mata Hari would have surely lived more easily. She would have not been the “trapper trapped” and would have stayed out of the political intrigue. The fact is that women missed some choices in that period, just as nowadays, through different forms.
- There would be no need to show the actress naked. The beauty of her silhouette would be shown with subtlety. The scenes with men would be romantic. A sensual scene would show only massages close to a bath, like a bath of harem (because I think massages are really good for health so I want to put it in the scenario!). Frankly, I have seen a lot of art nudes and I think it’s not necessary because the charm is more transmitted by the gaze and the silhouette (but I understand the meaning of art nude).
• The elements of beauty in the movie would be:
- Through the game of her shows, as she disguises herself for several themes of shows whose the most two important are: the game of cards (with an amazing set) where she represents the Queen playing with some adversaries, and the spirituality where she’s like a goddess with clothes reminding a magician or a knight amazon. The limit between truth and reality could look woolly sometimes, in order to put some mystery.
- Through the magic of her mysterious personality and spirituality. Her society parties would be again the opportunity to show clothes, the artistic freedom of this period and from designers, like Venitian masks, black cape-hooded, baroque costumes, effects of mirrors, laces on her boots like the knights. She’d be the queen letting to her pretenders some visiting cards having her image as a Queen of cards or hiding her identity with masks, showing her wonderful eyes only to her favourites. I would let the imagination of designers go! There could be some spiritual scenes where she’d be dressed in white, looking like a monk meditating close to the sea or trees, as she melted art and spirituality, as a tribute for gods.
A particular importance would be given to her eyes, her silhouette with long dresses exceeding her ankles, and the amazing flowers which are a big part of the romanticism. She could be compared to Medusa who had the power to change men as stones when they were meeting her gaze.
• The base of the story would be:
Mata Hari is a spiritual woman who makes shows with different themes. Then, she can travel all around the world to bring back costumes to insert in her shows, especially costumes of Siren to prepare a tribute to Poseidon for a next show. The government suddenly thinks that she can have a diplomatic influence between the countries that she currently visits and then decides to use her for political reasons. So she becomes a spy under pressure of the government and meets Alexis who is a military falling in love with her. The character of Alexis is not as innocent as he was in the previous movies. The relationship with the men is complex and dangerous. At the end, she escapes from political pressure, changing of country secretly.
• How to introduce this project to movie productions and with the participation of members or readers from this board:
1) First of all, it would be interesting to know if someone in the movies production would be eventually interested in this project before to build more developed details in order to avoid any waste of time for you and me, knowing that some of you have to spend a lot of time at work or studying. In the other hand, maybe the movies production would be more convinced in front of a very developed scenario, I don’t know. I think a summarized base of scenario can be a good first step, so I’ve made it here.
2) For really new and genius ideas, it would be interesting to get inspirers. I think I can have good elements of beauty for the movie or ideas to improve it step by step in front of projects, but for the rest, I’m not sure.
3) We can propose a project to movies productions, in particular the one which launched Dvds of Garbo for sale, I mean Warner Bros, but also to the other biggest productions (please watch the world directory to get addresses in the USA): The 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, Sony/Columbia Pictures, etc…
