Hello. I am new to the forum. This question has been bugging me for (literally) years. I watched a Greta Garbo movie several years ago that I have since forgotten. This movie contains my favorite Greta Garbo quote. She was standing at the top of a staircase at some type of ball or social gathering. She was talking to a man that approached her. And he asked her something like "What type of woman are you?" Her reply was "I'm a nice young girl... only not so young and not so nice."
Any ideas? For the longest time I thought it was Camile or Anna Karenina. But I have recently watched both and cannot find the quote. Thanks in advance for your replies.
Brian
PS- There actually is a user on this forum with something very similar to this quote in her profile. But I have never been able to find anything on the internet saying what movie it's from.

Hello
Actually the phrase "I am just a nice joung girl, not too young and not too nice" comes from the 1931 Clarence Brown film "Inspiration" with Garbo and Robert Montgomery. The scene does not however take place at the staircase where everyone makes a toast to the wit, charm and beauty of beautiful Yvone portrayed by Garbo, but right after in the subsequent scene where Garbo leaves the party with the young student she has fallen in love with portrayed by Montgomery. It is a beautiful film and Garbo is stunning in it.

Nakis,
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! ;D
I have been searching for that quote by recording all Greta Garbo movies on my DVR and then fast forwarding through them looking for the right scene. I always remembered the scene on the balcony at the top of a staircase. That would explain why I never found it. I'm going to set my DVR to look for that specific movie now. Thanks again. It's been about 5 years since I saw this movie (recorded when AMC did the Greta Garbo marathon) and I've been trying to find the movie ever since.

Dear Brian you are most welcome. I just forgot to say, the scene takes place in the carriage while Garbo and Montgomery drive to his place (probably the Latin Quarter in Paris). This is a wonderful film but unfortunately it is not appreciated by critics in general which is a shame. When you see Garbo here she totzlly takes your breath away with her beauty, grace and emotional intensity. The film was not released on DVD with the Greta Garbo signature collection, however you can still get it as a VHS from amazon, here is the link (and sometimes of course they show it on TCM). Best regards Nakis www.amazon.com/Inspiration-Greta-Garbo/dp/6302224381/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=video&qid=1196610544&sr=1-1
